The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that the state’s archery and crossbow deer hunting seasons will begin on Saturday, September 13, 2025. These seasons are scheduled to continue through January 4, 2026. In some counties and metropolitan subunits with extended seasons, hunting will remain open until January 31, 2026.
According to the DNR, the early archery and crossbow periods provide hunters with an opportunity to harvest antlerless deer before their behavior changes due to increased activity during the gun deer season. The department notes that bonus antlerless harvest authorizations are still available in many counties across Wisconsin.
The DNR is emphasizing safety for all participants in these hunting activities. Hunters are reminded of several key practices:
“Always practice TAB-K.
Always wear a safety harness in a tree stand.
Use three points of contact when going into or out of the stand.
Use a haul line to bring the unloaded bow or crossbow into the stand.
Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
Operate any ATV or UTV soberly and responsibly.”
These guidelines aim to reduce accidents and ensure safe experiences for all hunters.
All harvested deer must be registered by 5 p.m. on the day after recovery. Registration can be completed using GameReg online, by phone, or at a participating registration station. This requirement helps wildlife officials track harvest numbers and manage populations effectively.
To assist hunters in preparing for the season, the DNR provides mobile-friendly resources on its Hunting webpage. This site includes information about regulations, season dates, legal hunting hours, and other useful materials for those planning outings this fall and winter. Additionally, hunters can find details about public lands open for hunting through the Public Access Lands webpage maintained by the department.
Hunters are encouraged to review these resources before heading out into the field to ensure compliance with current rules and make use of available opportunities throughout Wisconsin’s diverse landscapes.
The opening of archery and crossbow seasons marks an important period for many outdoor enthusiasts in Wisconsin each year. With proper preparation and adherence to safety guidelines outlined by state officials, participants can contribute both to their own well-being and responsible wildlife management statewide.
