After the passage of a budget bill supported by former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers, Planned Parenthood has announced a temporary halt to abortion services in Wisconsin. The organization stated this measure is intended to prevent the loss of Badgercare coverage for family planning and other health services.

Senator Kelda Roys (D-Madison) raised concerns about what she described as a "backdoor abortion ban" included in the legislation, which she says targets Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health providers with the aim of restricting reproductive rights.

This development follows recent actions by Wisconsin Republicans, who introduced a bill asserting that abortions are never medically necessary to save lives. Additionally, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has initiated a review into the safety of mifepristone, an abortion medication.

In response to these events, Senator Roys said: “We do not live in a free society if politicians are forcing people to remain pregnant or give birth against their will. Having a child is one of the most personal, private decisions a person can make, and politicians have no business making those decisions for people, ever.

“Republican politicians, including Tom Tiffany and every Wisconsin Republican in Congress, championed the legislation that resulted in Planned Parenthood pausing abortion services. The actions of these anti-abortion politicians make our loved ones less safe, less free, and less prosperous as they eliminate the freedom to choose whether and when to have a family in Wisconsin. Abortion rights are overwhelmingly popular in Wisconsin and nationwide.

“No one’s freedom or health care access should be limited by where they live, or the whims of a judge, politician, or corporation. Together, I and my Democratic colleagues will continue to work alongside Wisconsinites to ensure everyone has the freedom to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions.”
