Steve Stocker, Mayor of the City of Sun Prairie, said on April 8 that residents voted against a proposed property tax levy increase intended to improve public safety services and maintain current city programs.

The outcome means city officials will need to reconsider the operating budget for Sun Prairie. The failure of the referendum may result in service reductions as officials work to address projected budget gaps during annual discussions continuing through fall 2026.

Stocker said, “Yesterday, residents of Sun Prairie voted against a proposed property tax levy increase that would have allowed the City to improve public safety services while maintaining the existing quality services and programs the community enjoys.”

He also explained that “the City of Sun Prairie will revisit its operating budget and determine next steps to address the projected budget gaps. As annual budget discussions continue through fall 2026, the City Council will need to make difficult decisions about cutting services, programs and staffing, with specific cuts determined during the annual budget process.”

Stocker thanked community members for their participation in this decision-making process: “We appreciate our residents for making their voices heard regarding this important decision that will shape the future of our City.”

Sun Prairie is located in northeastern Dane County and has seen significant population growth since its incorporation as a city in 1958.
