For the third year in a row, UW Health has been recognized by Practice Greenhealth for its environmental leadership. The organization awarded UW Health with the Emerald Award and five other sustainability accolades.

Practice Greenhealth is a nonprofit focused on promoting sustainability within health care systems across the nation. Each year, it honors those that demonstrate leadership and innovation in this area.

UW Health’s three hospitals in Madison—University Hospital, American Family Children’s Hospital, and East Madison Hospital—were highlighted for their efforts to minimize their environmental impact. Rick Redetzke, system vice president for facilities and support services at UW Health, stated that “these awards reflect the collective efforts of our staff, from surgical staff to food service teams, who are deeply committed to healthier people and a healthier planet.”

East Madison Hospital was specifically recognized with the Greening the Operating Room Award for its advancements in reducing waste and emissions from surgical procedures. This initiative is part of efforts by the UW Health Green Operating Room Council.

In terms of food services, UW Health received two Circle of Excellence awards for its climate-conscious culinary practices. Brad Ouellet, system vice president of supply chain and support services at UW Health, remarked on this achievement: “Our commitment to serving climate-smart, healing cuisine is more than a trend; it’s a long-term investment in patient health and environmental stewardship.”

Additionally, UW Health was noted as the first Midwest health system to join the Coolfood Pledge aimed at cutting food-related greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.

The Emerald Award was granted to all three Madison hospitals for scoring highly across multiple sustainability categories. UnityPoint Health – Meriter also received recognition with the Partner for Change Award due to its effective reduction of toxic substances like mercury.
