The City of Verona announced on April 10 that it has joined with Dane County Ripple Effects to launch the Adopt a Storm Drain Program, inviting community members to help keep local waterways clean and reduce street flooding by clearing debris from storm drains.

The initiative aims to protect neighborhoods and natural resources by preventing polluted runoff from entering local rivers, lakes, and streams. Blocked storm drains can cause localized flooding and allow trash and leaves to flow into water bodies such as Badger Mill Creek and the Sugar River.

Residents who participate in the program can select a nearby storm drain to adopt. Volunteers are asked to clear debris around their chosen drain at least once per month or before significant rainfall. Those who sign up receive a free cleaning kit containing a safety vest, storm drain decal, dustpan and broom, debris collection bucket, and an Adopt a Storm Drain sticker.

Collected materials can be brought to the city’s yard waste and brush drop-off site at 2159 Range Trail, which is open daily from dawn until dusk. Participants are encouraged to register through the Dane County Ripple Effects Adopt a Storm Drain website.

More information about how this program operates in Verona is available on the city’s official website at https://www.veronawi.gov/948/Adopt-A-Storm-Drain.
