The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding the public about the variety of universal recreation options available in the state’s parks, forests, and recreation areas. These options include equipment such as adaptive kayaks, all-terrain wheelchairs, and beach wheelchairs. Additionally, amenities like accessible fishing piers and barrier-free cabins are provided to ensure everyone can enjoy outdoor activities.

Public lands serve as communal spaces for relaxation, physical activity, and socialization. Universal recreation opportunities aim to make these benefits accessible to all visitors.

July marks Disability Pride Month and the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The DNR emphasizes its commitment to offering exceptional outdoor experiences for people of all abilities throughout this month and beyond.

Many state properties offer adaptive equipment for outdoor activities. The DNR’s collection includes adaptive kayaks, beach wheelchairs, motorized and nonmotorized outdoor wheelchairs, cross-country sit skis, and beach access mats. Information on locations hosting this equipment is available on the Adaptive Equipment webpage.

Park conditions may change, so visitors interested in using equipment should contact the property beforehand to confirm availability. To find properties with accessible amenities and equipment, visitors can use the “Accessible Features and Services” filter on the Find A Park webpage.

Universal recreation equipment provides opportunities for families to enjoy outdoor activities together. Features like universal trails and barrier-free paths enhance safety and accessibility for all visitors.

The DNR invites everyone to Universal Recreation Day at Kettle Moraine State Forest – Pike Lake Unit on September 6, 2025. This event will feature activities suitable for all ages along with various universal recreation equipment demonstrations.

For more information about universal recreation amenities at Wisconsin State Park System properties, visit the DNR’s Open the Outdoors webpage.
