This pioneering proposal aims to create portable benefits accounts for gig economy drivers in Wisconsin. The bill would permit companies to make voluntary contributions to these benefit accounts. Drivers could then use the funds for retirement savings, insurance premiums, or income support during significant life events such as illness or childbirth.
Senator Bradley stated, “This bill is a huge win for retirees looking to stay active, students paying their way through school, parents needing flexible hours, and entrepreneurs investing in their futures.” He emphasized that “SB 256 removes the red tape that prevents more than 100,000 Wisconsin gig workers from accessing meaningful benefits—without forcing them to give up the freedom and independence they value as independent contractors.”
A recent survey indicates that over 88% of gig drivers prioritize flexibility and independence in their work. However, current Wisconsin legislation restricts companies from offering these benefits without affecting the workers’ independent contractor status.
After the hearing on Tuesday, Senator Bradley remains hopeful about the bill’s progress and its potential impact on gig workers throughout Wisconsin.
