Today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned certain powers of the Wisconsin Legislature related to oversight over unelected bureaucrats. The ruling has raised concerns among various groups, including Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC), which expressed apprehension about the implications and precedent set by this decision.
Scott Manley, WMC Executive Vice President of Government Relations, commented on the ruling. He stated, “Today’s Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling takes lawmaking out of the hands of elected legislators and places it in the hands of unelected bureaucrats. It is profoundly undemocratic and unconstitutional, and is driven by politics rather than the law.”
Manley further criticized the decision for its impact on businesses and other regulated communities. “The decision is terrible news for the regulated community, including businesses, because government bureaucrats do not understand the cost, practicality, economic impact, or job losses resulting from their regulation,” he said.
He also warned about potential consequences: “History will remember this decision as a turning point away from a government of the people, by the people, and for the people to instead consolidate power in an unelected ruling class of Madison bureaucrats who lord over Wisconsinites unimpeded.”
The statement reflects WMC’s stance on maintaining legislative oversight and its concern over what it perceives as a shift towards increased power for unelected officials within the executive branch.
