The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation will be giving a $400,000 grant to the Urban League of Greater Madison for a planned business hub for minority-owned businesses on the city’s south side.
The fund will facilitate loans, grants, along with technical assistance to startups and existing businesses who are interested in moving operations into the South Madison Black Business Hub.
Urban League of Greater Madison and Black Business Hub received grant funding for the project.
The Hub will be located at the corner intersection of South Park Street and Hughes Place.
Mayor Satya Rhodes tweeted her support of the organization.
“Congratulations Urban League of Greater Madison and the Black Business Hub – one step closer to reality,” she said.
The Urban League of Greater Madison's roots date back to 1910, with an objective on providing community and chances for black citizens.
Urban League president and CEO Ruben Anthony said at a recent news conference that the hub was critical for the cultivation of black enterprises.
“The purpose of the hub will create a space to grow and nurture black and other businesses,” Anthony said. “It’s critical when you have a hub coming up to have an accelerator and grant and loan program.”
The Hub is being proposed to be developed at the Village on Park mall property, in an effort to cultivate black entrepreneurs.
