Issued the following announcement on Aug 31.
In July, President Biden promised the American people a responsible withdrawal of our troops and personnel out of Afghanistan. What I have watched over the past couple of weeks, and the absolute devastation that unfolded last week showed just how far the President missed the mark.
First, the President gave up our most secure airfield in Afghanistan. Our military was then forced to operate on an unsecure civilian airfield while totally exposed in an effort to evacuate those trapped behind Taliban lines. What resulted was an absolute tragedy, that as of today has claimed the lives of fourteen U.S. service members. Unthinkably, the White House has confirmed that they are relying on an agreement with the Taliban to guarantee the safe passage of Americans out of Afghanistan, which predictably failed.
This loss of American lives is unacceptable and should have never happened, and I fear there is worse to come.
Recent reports indicate that other suicide bombers have tried attacking Americans but were thwarted. Just this morning, the Kabul airport was targeted by a rocket attack, but it was intercepted by U.S. missile defenses. Clearly, Hamid Karzai International Airport is an unsecure, sitting duck.
We are now left in an untenable situation. Potentially thousands of Americans are still stranded in Afghanistan and President Biden’s August 31st deadline is rapidly approaching. If by tomorrow there are still Americans stranded in Afghanistan, President Biden will be faced with a difficult choice – either to extend the time U.S. forces are in Afghanistan or leave behind Americans that are stranded and unable to evacuate. In either situation, there will almost assuredly be more casualties.
There is also the pressing concern of refugees fleeing Afghanistan due to the country’s collapse. On Friday, I visited Fort McCoy to tour the facilities where refugees are being housed. I received a briefing on the operational procedures in place and learned about steps being taken to process refugees from Afghanistan.
I appreciate Major General Guthrie and the 88th Readiness Division for hosting me, as well as the State Department staff who briefed us on the ongoing resettlement effort at Fort McCoy. I learned more about the Department’s plan to assist these Afghan refugees and their families, and what resources Congress can provide to improve their capacity and capability
While the visit was productive, I remain concerned about the indefinite housing of applicants while they await final processing, as well as the health and security risk this sudden influx of refugees poses to Wisconsinites. Congress must return to Washington to pass much needed legislation that provides a long-term, sustainable solution to this problem.
Democrats Pass Senator Bernie Sanders' Proposal to Inflate U.S. Deficit
Last week, I voted against the Democrats’ reckless budget proposal drafted by socialist Senator Bernie Sanders. This legislation would incur $17 trillion in new debt over 10 years, including $3.5 trillion that would be spent immediately on partisan priorities.
This is the left’s latest attempt to use the budget reconciliation process to pass ridiculous proposals they know can’t muster support as standalone bills.
To put things into perspective for Wisconsinites, this budget burdens residents in Wisconsin alone with an additional $310 billion in debt and reverses tax relief the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provided Wisconsin families
This comes as another hit on top of the ballooning inflation we’ve experienced every month since President Biden took office. This ridiculous liberal wish list fans the flames of inflation and debt, and taxpayers will get burned by this reckless spending.
