Fans in attendance were excited, but they couldn't help the UW Badgers win their season opening game against the Penn State Lions, which ended in a 16-10 loss.
The Badgers held Penn State to a scoreless first half and both teams scored touchdowns in the third quarter to maintain the tie. In the fourth quarter, senior kicker Collin Larsh scored a 43-yard field goal to briefly give the Badgers a 10-7 lead. However, the Lions would go on to score the next nine points to close out the win.
With 9:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, the 10-all tie was broken when Penn State's Noah Cain scored with a 2-yard touchdown run, but Jonathan Stout missed the extra-point which bounced off the left upright.
The team’s second game is also a home game against Eastern Michigan, playing on Sept. 11, according to the team's posted schedule.
"The greatest tradition in college football is back," the Wisconsin Badgers wrote in a Sept. 4 Twitter post.
