The City of Madison is going all in when it comes to keeping city streets clean from Halloween season debris.
“City of Madison Streets Division crews will collect pumpkins along with other yard waste when crews pick up leaves in your neighborhood,” Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway posted on her Twitter page.
On the city website, officials are also keeping residents aware of the best steps to take in making it easy for workers to make curbside pickups and the dates they have set aside for such services.
“Pile your leaves and yard waste at the street edge or terrace,” authorities add on the website. “Do not put leaves in the street; this is an ordinance violation and it harms our lakes.”
Compostable paper leaf bags are also recommended, with using a tarp or plastic cover to cover leafs in order to prevent them from blowing away is also favorably viewed.
In West Hartford, Connecticut authorities report more than 1 billion pumpkins end up in landfills across the country every year, prompting concerns about dwindling space in those circles and the greenhouse gases that emerge from those landfills.
“When food waste decomposes in landfills, under piles of trash without oxygen, methane — which is more harmful than CO2 — is released into the atmosphere as a byproduct,” authorities added in a press release.
