A University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Education program that provides financial support for aspiring educators has been extended through 2026.

According to Channel 3000, the Wisconsin Teacher Pledge program provides financial compensation for tuition, fees, testing and licensing to students seeking a career in education. The program, which was originally only planned to last five years, has been extended through the 2025-26 academic year.

“Our Teacher Pledge program holds great potential for the state of Wisconsin,” School of Education Dean Diana Hess said in a statement, according to Channel 3000. “We have to explore solutions quickly.”

In return for the financial aid, students that go through the program agree to teach for four years at a Wisconsin K-12 school. Students that go on to teach especially needed subjects or go to teach at high-needs schools will only be required to teach three years.

The program was launched in response to a current shortage of Wisconsin teachers, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wisconsin Teacher Pledge program is expected to support more than 1,000 students by incentivizing individuals to seek careers in teaching and encouraging current educators to stay in the profession.
