In a move echoing the fervor of college basketball's March Madness, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has introduced a new athletics program geared towards middle school students. The initiative, launched by the MMSD Athletics Department, aims to prepare young participants for high school athletics, offering a range of sports activities at no cost.
MMSD Athletic Director Jeremy Schlitz emphasized the values instilled through sports, stating, "Athletics support the development of commitment, reliability, honesty, integrity, accountability, and perseverance in each of our student-athletes." He added, "It’s never too early to learn these skills."
The program includes offerings such as cross country, wrestling, volleyball, cheerleading, and pom/dance, catering to 6th to 8th graders. Conducted at the feeder pattern high schools, each activity is overseen by high school coaches, providing valuable instruction and skill-building opportunities.
While current spots for the activities are filling up quickly, Schlitz expressed optimism for the program's future expansion. He mentioned, "Those interested should stay tuned for additional offerings," expressing a desire to include more sports and attract a broader student participation base in the coming years.
Schlitz highlighted the broader impact of inclusive athletic programming, noting, "The more equitable athletic programming opportunities we can provide for all our students, the more [they] can strive to become better students, athletes, leaders, and citizens."
Middle school students keen on exploring the athletic opportunities can reach out to their respective high school's athletic department for registration details. The MMSD Athletics Program stands as a testament to the district's commitment to holistic student development and the cultivation of valuable life skills through sports.
