Madison College, UW Health, and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development have come together to introduce the first respiratory therapist registered apprenticeship program in the United States. This innovative initiative aims to address the growing demand for respiratory therapists who play a crucial role in providing care to patients with respiratory conditions, including those affected by COVID-19.
Marissa Tokarczyk, interim dean for the School of Health Education at Madison College, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating that it demonstrates the institution's dedication to addressing workforce challenges through collaborative efforts with industry partners. Tokarczyk also expressed excitement about the launch of the respiratory therapist apprenticeship program, emphasizing the importance of supporting diverse healthcare personnel in pursuing associate degrees.
The apprenticeship program, which spans three years, is open to UW Health staff members, with applications set to begin on April 1. Graduates of the program will earn an associate degree and become licensed registered respiratory therapists upon successfully passing board examinations. The curriculum includes a combination of classroom instruction provided by Madison College faculty and hands-on experience at UW Health.
In addition to the respiratory therapist apprenticeship, Madison College previously partnered with UW Health and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development to establish a four-year registered nurse apprenticeship program. The success of these initiatives underscores the value of academic and clinical collaborations in addressing workforce shortages in the healthcare sector.
As Tokarczyk stated, "With workforce demand outpacing the supply of graduates, academic and clinical partnerships that support incumbent workers... are essential to addressing shortages in our Wisconsin healthcare workforce." The commitment to providing opportunities for incumbent workers to pursue higher education reflects a proactive approach to strengthening the healthcare workforce in the state.
The launch of the respiratory therapist registered apprenticeship program signifies a significant step towards meeting the healthcare industry's evolving needs and ensuring quality care for patients with respiratory conditions. Madison College's ongoing efforts to foster partnerships and create innovative educational pathways demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing workforce challenges in the healthcare sector.
