Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin addressed the Faculty Senate, media, and protestors, emphasizing the complexity of the situation surrounding the encampment on Library Mall. Chancellor Mnookin began by acknowledging the right of protestors to be present and expressing the challenges faced by the community amidst global events.

Regarding the encampment, Chancellor Mnookin highlighted safety concerns and the risks associated with the open encampment, including reports of incendiary rhetoric and threats towards certain groups on campus. She stressed the importance of upholding campus regulations and the First Amendment, stating, "I cannot authorize a singular exception under Chapter 18 for one organization to protest in this manner unless I am prepared to make the same decision for all other groups who might want something similar."

The Chancellor also addressed the demands presented by the encampment organizers, emphasizing the university's limited control over certain decisions and the need to uphold academic freedom and respect for diverse viewpoints. She stated, "Acceding to boycotts against Israel… would both be a violation of state law and run counter to our deeply held respect for academic freedom and the free exchange of ideas."

Despite the challenges and disagreements, Chancellor Mnookin expressed a commitment to facilitating further conversations and opportunities for dialogue, stating, "There may be ways that we can encourage further conversations about these deeply felt issues as PART of sifting and winnowing."
