Jesus Cortez, a former engineer at UW-Madison and now a math teacher at Sennett Middle School, has been honored with an honorable mention for the annual Crystal Apple Award by WMTV-15 News. This recognition comes just a few years into his teaching career.
Cortez is known for his natural problem-solving abilities. He initially pursued these interests through an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering, where he studied complex mathematical principles, computer programming, and modeling software. However, after graduation, he found corporate engineering jobs unfulfilling as their impact was often measured by stock value.
In search of a more meaningful application of his skills, Cortez transitioned to education. After earning a master's degree in special education, he began teaching at Sennett Middle School this fall.
Cortez said, “I come from a low-income neighborhood in the Bronx, so I’ve seen what education can do and the downfalls of what education can bring if it’s not invested in profitably or equitably. There are massive problems in education. I know I can’t solve them on my own, but I can at least try and help to bring some solutions to the table.”
To help his students develop their own problem-solving skills beyond academic tests, Cortez initiated Wellness Wednesdays. This dedicated class time allows students to address issues they're facing while learning important lessons about communication techniques, teamwork, cultural representation, self-esteem building, academic anxiety management and more. It also fosters community spirit as students collaborate to assist each other.
Reflecting on his achievement and future plans, Cortez said: “I’m figuring out how to do this job better every single day. It’s incredible to be recognized as an honorable mention for the Crystal Apple Award. I’m excited to keep working in education and supporting my students.”
