In recognition of Pride Month, the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) is highlighting the role of inclusivity clubs such as Kromrey Middle School’s GLAM (Gay, Lesbian, and More). These clubs provide a supportive community for students, ensuring that voices like those of Beatrix Olejniczak and Aubrey Montemayor are heard and celebrated. This year, these two students raised the Pride flag at the District Services Center, symbolizing the inclusivity that GLAM represents.
The communications team interviewed Beatrix and Aubrey to discuss their experiences within the club. They spoke about how GLAM hosts various activities, including friendly hangouts and educational outings. Trips to places like the UW-Madison LGBTQ+ Center offer a glimpse into the wider LGBTQ+ community.
"These trips help us see that we're part of a larger community, and that's really comforting," said Beatrix. Aubrey added, "Exactly. It’s a great way to find friends who really get you."
Staff members Joe Bins, Dr. Irene Ann Resenly, and Julie Carbon have been instrumental in creating an inclusive space within the school. Their efforts have enabled students in the club to make deeper connections and explore their identities in a supportive setting.
"It's the little things teachers do that make a big difference," said Beatrix. Reflecting on GLAM's impact, Aubrey noted, "The club is like a bridge to a future where you feel accepted and happy."
Members of GLAM aim to promote inclusivity throughout the school by suggesting policy changes to better support LGBTQ+ students. "We believe everyone can take small yet powerful steps to create a welcoming atmosphere," said Beatrix. "Every respectful gesture counts," agreed Aubrey.
The students advocate for district-wide efforts to enhance support for LGBTQ+ students, starting with recognizing preferred names and pronouns as basic yet significant acts. Beatrix and Aubrey encourage their peers to explore what GLAM has to offer—highlighting it as a space where everyone can belong and contribute to mutual understanding.
During Pride Month, MCPASD acknowledges the critical role clubs like GLAM play in schools by championing students' fundamental rights to be themselves, fostering kindness, respect, and equality within the school climate.
