Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin addressed the University of Wisconsin-Madison community on September 4, 2024, marking the first day of the new academic year. In her message, she emphasized the sense of possibility that accompanies the start of a new semester.
"I have always loved the first day of school," Mnookin stated. "Today, the history of our next year together remains unwritten and for each of us there ought to be a sense of endless possibility."
Mnookin extended a warm welcome to new undergraduate students, highlighting their selection from nearly 70,000 applicants. She also welcomed those joining various graduate programs.
"To our new undergraduate students: Welcome and congratulations! You are part of one of the most competitive classes in our history," she said.
Returning students were also greeted with enthusiasm. Mnookin encouraged them to find satisfaction in intellectual discovery and community building. She invited all students to join her for monthly "Chats with the Chancellor," small group gatherings over breakfast or lunch.
"May this be a year in which you find great satisfaction in intellectual discovery as you continue to build your community and your sense of purpose," she remarked.
Mnookin acknowledged faculty and staff for their dedication to teaching, research, and public service. She welcomed 142 new faculty members, noting it as one of the largest cohorts in university history.
"Thank you for your deep devotion to our mission," Mnookin expressed. "You continue to be extraordinary ambassadors for the Wisconsin Idea."
She underscored the importance of respect and problem-solving across differences within the university community. Mnookin introduced an updated Free Expression website aimed at reinforcing commitment to open inquiry and First Amendment rights.
"In that vein, I want to bring to your attention our updated and expanded Free Expression website," she noted.
Mnookin concluded by encouraging everyone to create new connections on campus.
"I hope you’ll choose to reach out to someone you’ve not yet met," she urged. "Create today at least one new connection – if not two or three or five."
