Icy Zhang, an assistant professor of learning sciences in the Department of Educational Psychology at the School of Education, has joined the faculty at UW–Madison. Hailing from Suzhou, China, Zhang completed her BA and PhD in psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Reflecting on her research interests, Zhang shared, "Growing up influenced by my grandparents who are psychologists, I’ve always been fascinated by psychology and human development. However, it was in my high school I started to see how psychological theories can make a practical impact in education."

Zhang expressed enthusiasm for joining UW–Madison due to its reputation for excellence and collaboration. "I want to work alongside world-class scholars who care about education," she said. She first visited the campus during her PhD interview in 2019 and noted her positive impressions: "It was the winter season when I saw the heaviest snow in my life...I thought to myself – I can see myself thriving here."

Her work resonates with the Wisconsin Idea as she aims to make a meaningful community impact through educational psychology. "The Wisconsin Idea echoes deeply within my heart," she stated.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Zhang enjoys painting, fishing, and theater.
