For the first time, high school students with disabilities in the district are participating as varsity athletes through the newly established Adapted Sports League. This initiative emphasizes inclusion and the joy of competition.

Coaches Kevin Bavery and Jessica McIntosh lead the coed adapted sports soccer team. Bavery is in his 19th year with the district as head boys' basketball coach, while McIntosh has been an assistant girls' basketball coach for four years. Their commitment to making a difference is evident in their leadership roles.

The Adapted Sports League was initiated by Sun Prairie School District, inviting other local districts to join a league where every student could experience being an athlete. Special education coordinator Nicole Morehouse, along with athletics leaders Jamie Sims and Brad Crandell, played crucial roles in realizing this project. They received support from paraeducators and student helpers to create a supportive environment for these athletes.

The team's first practice was significant, marking many players' initial experience on an organized sports team. “It was a new experience for all of us, but it was full of fun and excitement,” said McIntosh. The fact that these students will earn varsity letters adds to its significance.

Their inaugural game ended in a close 9-11 loss to Sun Prairie East but marked an extraordinary event for players and families alike. “As coaches, this program has warmed my heart in ways I can’t even describe,” McIntosh expressed. Bavery shared similar sentiments about connecting with his team and witnessing their joy when cheered by the crowd.

Upcoming home games at Middleton High School include matches against Waunakee on October 17 at 5:00 p.m., and another on October 22 at 5:30 p.m., both offering free admission.
