The City of Madison has initiated work on the Southwest and Southeast Area Plans, following authorization from the Common Council in October. These plans are part of a series of 12 area plans under an updated Planning Framework approved in 2022. The city is inviting residents to participate in kickoff events scheduled for November 19 at Toki Middle School and December 4 at La Follette High School. Virtual sessions will also be available on December 3 and December 5.
Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Each area plan is a guide for the future of our neighborhoods, so it’s critical that residents get involved in the planning process.” Planning Director Meagan Tuttle added that these events offer a chance for residents to engage with various city agencies.
The new plans aim to address issues outlined in the city's Comprehensive Plan, including land use, transportation, housing, economy, culture, and health. A Community Action Strategy will be developed for areas with higher proportions of low-income residents.
Background information gathering has already begun. Following the kickoff events, there will be additional opportunities for public input through surveys and meetings throughout 2025. Final drafts are expected to be reviewed by early 2026.
Updates and more details about future engagement opportunities will be provided via newsletters on the city's website.
