The Streets Division has announced a final opportunity for Madison residents to have their leaves and yard waste collected. This last chance pickup is scheduled for Sunday, December 8, 2024, weather permitting. Residents are advised to set out their leaves and yard waste on this date.

Crews will visit all neighborhoods in Madison during the workdays following December 8 to collect the waste. The division emphasizes that every neighborhood shares the same set-out date and asks residents to be patient as it may take several days for crews to complete the collection across the city.

However, there is a possibility that this schedule could be disrupted by snow. "Snow response duties are more important than leaf pickup," states the Streets Division. If significant snowfall occurs, resources may need to be redirected from leaf collection to snow removal.

Typically, street sweepers follow behind leaf collection crews to clear any remaining debris. However, due to expected cold temperatures, sweepers might not be used frequently during this period. The water required for their operation can freeze at temperatures around 28 degrees, potentially damaging the vehicles. Additionally, most of the sweeper fleet will undergo annual maintenance starting Monday, December 9, leaving only a few available.

Residents should anticipate seeing more leaf debris left on streets after collection due to these limitations.

For those who prefer or need an alternative method of disposal, yard waste and leaves can still be taken to drop-off sites. However, note that these sites are adjusting their hours for winter. The Olin Avenue location is closed for the season while South Point Rd and Sycamore Avenue sites will soon start limited winter hours. Residents planning to use these facilities should check www.cityofmadison.com/DropOffSites for updated hours before visiting.

Further details about yard waste collection rules and other services offered by the Streets Division can be found at www.cityofmadison.com/yardwaste and www.cityofmadison.com/Streets respectively.
