The Madison Fire Department (MFD) and the National Fire Sprinkler Association Wisconsin Chapter (NFSA) are collaborating this holiday season to provide safety tips for home decoration. They emphasize the importance of automatic sprinklers in protecting homes, individuals, and families from fires.

Candles are a popular choice during the holidays, but they pose a risk. "Half of all candle fires in the U.S. started because a flammable piece of décor was placed too close to the lit candle," according to MFD and NFSA. They suggest using battery-powered LED candles as a safer alternative. If real candles are used, they should be placed on noncombustible surfaces and kept at least 12 inches away from other objects.

For those decorating with string lights, it is recommended to use lights with a "UL" mark indicating safety testing. LED lights generate less heat and reduce fire risks compared to traditional bulbs. Old or damaged lights should be disposed of properly at City of Madison drop-off sites rather than in home recycling carts.

Regarding electricity usage, residents are advised not to overload power strips or daisy chain extension cords when setting up holiday displays.

Christmas tree safety is another concern highlighted by MFD and NFSA. While Christmas tree fires are rare, they can spread quickly if they occur. Real trees need regular watering to prevent them from drying out and becoming more flammable. Trees should be placed away from heat sources and secured properly.

Home fire sprinklers are described as an effective method for preventing injury or death during house fires by both organizations: "Automatic fire sprinklers activate to douse the fire...until firefighters arrive." Renters and buyers are encouraged to choose homes equipped with these systems.
