Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has extended a warm welcome to students returning to campus for the new semester. In her message, she expressed hope that students had a chance to relax and recharge over the past month.

During the break, significant developments took place on campus. The university received final approval for constructing a new Engineering building, welcomed 346 new students, and announced the discovery of a dinosaur species older than any previously found in North America.

Despite mild snowfall by Madison standards, Chancellor Mnookin noted several cold days and mentioned that Lake Mendota officially froze over. She expressed anticipation for an upcoming Winter Carnival next month.

Mnookin encouraged students to seize opportunities in the new semester by connecting with people, engaging with faculty on various topics, starting research projects, or joining student organizations. She emphasized the university's commitment to inclusivity and respectful engagement in learning and exchanging ideas.

She invited students to attend the January 28 MLK Symposium featuring Donzaleigh Abernathy as a speaker. Abernathy is known as the goddaughter of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and daughter of Rev. Dr. Ralph Abernathy, co-founder of the Civil Rights Movement.

Mnookin reminded students about available resources for academic success, career exploration, health support, and community building. She also suggested staying informed through the campus events calendar.

In closing her message, she wished students a successful first week back on campus and encouraged them to share their experiences with friends and family.
