The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and safety for all students amid evolving executive orders. Superintendent Joe Gothard has assured families that the district remains dedicated to providing a supportive learning environment, regardless of students' immigration status, race, religion, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

"We recognize the growing fear and uncertainty among many families in our district," Gothard stated. He emphasized MMSD's adherence to laws and policies that protect against discrimination. The district will continue to follow guidance from the Department of Education and the Department of Public Instruction.

The Board of Education supports these commitments through resolutions adopted in April 2017 and May 2021. They have declared MMSD facilities as safe spaces for students and families.

Efforts are underway to engage principals, educators, staff, community partners, and local officials in developing support resources. Despite diverse perspectives within the community, there is a shared responsibility to uphold the rights and dignity of every child and staff member.

MMSD's nondiscrimination policy ensures protection against discrimination based on various personal characteristics. Privacy rights under FERPA are also highlighted, guaranteeing access control over student records irrespective of background.

In cases where unauthorized individuals enter school premises seeking information about students or staff, MMSD personnel are instructed not to disclose any details without consent. Enforcement officers will not be allowed entry into buildings without proper authorization.

Support resources have been developed in collaboration with local organizations to assist immigrant students and families, address mental health needs, and promote LGBTQIA+ equity within MMSD.

Families are encouraged to update emergency contact information via Infinite Campus as part of ongoing communication efforts.

Superintendent Gothard concluded by urging unity within the community: "Now more than ever, it is crucial that we come together."
