Madison College has recognized UW Health with the Futuremaker Partner Award, acknowledging their joint efforts to address workforce challenges in healthcare. The award, presented by the Wisconsin Technical College System Board (WTCS) and its member colleges, highlights successful collaborations between technical colleges and employers.
The ceremony took place on March 11 at Madison College's Truax Campus. S. Mark Tyler, WTCS Board president, emphasized the importance of healthcare programs in meeting employer needs: "Healthcare is not only a critical need for Wisconsin residents, it also represents a significant portion of the programs offered by our colleges to meet the needs of healthcare employers."
UW Health has been proactive in addressing potential shortages in nursing staff, anticipating a deficit of 20,000 nurses by 2040. They have implemented measures to build a sustainable workforce.
Dr. Alan Kaplan, CEO of UW Health, stated: "Together, we are working to lower barriers to rewarding careers in healthcare and finding innovative solutions to a nationwide workforce shortage to ultimately ensure there are qualified experts to care for patients' needs in Madison and beyond."
In fall 2023, Madison College and UW Health introduced the nation's first Registered Nurse Apprenticeship program. This initiative combines academic instruction with clinical training and offers financial support for tuition and supplies. It expanded into respiratory therapy apprenticeships in fall 2024.
The partnership between Madison College and UW Health aims to develop diverse healthcare providers through mentoring and community resources. Both institutions are key players in Wisconsin's Biohealth Tech Hub project focused on career development.
Madison College President Dr. Tim Casper remarked: "UW Health's partnership with Madison College exemplifies the spirit of the Futuremaker Partner Award." He expressed optimism about future collaborations that will enhance patient care quality across Wisconsin.
