MMSD highlights winter sports achievements as spring season begins

As the winter season concludes and spring approaches, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) reflects on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in winter sports while preparing for upcoming spring competitions.

Jeremy Schlitz, MMSD Athletic Director, expressed pride in the performance of the winter sports teams. "Our winter sports teams showcased remarkable dedication, skill and sportsmanship," Schlitz stated. "We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the positive representation they brought to our district."

In basketball, several players were recognized for their outstanding performances. Princess Nwachukwu from Madison Memorial was named Big 8 Player of the Year in girls basketball. The First Team All-Conference honorees included Avery Blue (Memorial), Nyajuacni Riak (La Follette), and Valerie Richardson (East). In boys basketball, Ezra Liggon (Memorial) and Michael Wilson (West) earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Boys hockey saw Milo Boyle from Madison Memorial being named Big 8 Player of the Year, with Dmitry Picek from Madison West making the First Team All-Conference. The Cap City Cougars co-op girls hockey team, featuring athletes from East and La Follette, qualified for the state tournament.

In gymnastics, Drew Bender achieved notable placements at the Big 8 Meet with a 5th place in Vault, 2nd in Beam, and 4th All-Around. Claire Wendler secured a 5th place on Beam.

Wrestling also saw success with state qualifiers Silas Hunter (East), Likita Hodges (La Follette), and Henry Miesbauer (West). The Vel Phillips Memorial Girls Wrestling Team triumphed at the Nathan Hale Tournament by taking first place.

In boys swim and dive competitions, Memorial and West placed 7th and 8th respectively in the state team competition. State medalists included AJ Beard from Memorial as runner-up in diving; Ilan Rabinowitz from West placed fourth; Alex Heinrich from Memorial won two state championships; Max Garbacz from West also secured high rankings.

Cheerleading achievements included Madison East placing fifth in the Varsity Small Non-Tumble All-Girl Division at WACPC State Results while Madison La Follette took second place with their Game Day Routine.

Looking ahead to spring sports, MMSD is eager to welcome back track & field along with softball, baseball, girls soccer, boys tennis, and boys golf as they begin their outdoor practices and competitions.
