Stephanie Belmas, the Director and Associate Dean of Madison College's Center for International Education (CIE), has turned her passion for travel into a career that helps students gain valuable international experiences. Her interest in the field began as a high school freshman when she participated in the Madison-Freiburg Sister City exchange program, marking her first time abroad. This experience led to further opportunities, including hosting and being hosted by exchange families, internships in Switzerland and Mexico, and studying in Australia.
Belmas emphasizes the importance of international education in today's interconnected world. "We are living in a globally interconnected world, fueled by technological advances and social media," she says. She believes that engaging with diverse cultures is crucial for developing cultural humility and gaining a broader perspective.
For students considering studying abroad, Belmas advises starting early. "Get started right away," she recommends, noting that preparation typically takes about a year. The CIE offers various programs to make these experiences accessible through scholarships and collaboration with Financial Aid.
Belmas is proud of the growth of Madison College's international student program, which now serves approximately 200 students from over 60 countries. Reflecting on her role at CIE over the past 16 years, she expresses gratitude for being able to support an incredible team and stay connected with former students who share positive memories of their experiences.
"To be able to do so as part of my career? Well, that makes me feel like I’m one of the luckiest people in the world!" Belmas concludes.
