Madison College's School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is hosting an exhibition titled "Art of STEM" at the Truax campus gallery. This event showcases a variety of creative works inspired by STEM principles, crafted by students, faculty, and staff. The exhibit includes diverse pieces such as dioramas, paintings, agar art, and digital creations.
One featured piece is IT student Shaun Khang’s portrait of General Vang Pao. Titled "Vang Pao: Kuv Haiv Neeg Hauv Code," it combines Python coding with handcrafting to integrate culture and technology. Liberal arts transfer student Willow Ungaro also contributes with her art on agar plates using bacterial isolates, exploring microbial behavior through colony spacing and growth conditions.
Physical Science faculty member Matthew Lazzara presents composite images from meteorological satellites that depict the Antarctic landscape's symmetry and precision. The Civil Engineering Technology faculty offers a slide deck revealing the aesthetic aspects of infrastructure design. Instructor Richard Schneider explains that the exhibit aims to present engineering as a blend of science and creativity: "By presenting these images through an engineer's artistic lens, this exhibit challenges viewers to see engineering as more than calculations and blueprints—a fusion of science, technology, and creativity shapes the world around us."
The opening ceremony for "Art of STEM" will take place on April 3rd from 4-6 p.m., with the exhibition running until April 18th. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., located in Room A1005 at the Truax Building in Madison, Wisconsin.
