Metro Transit's General Manager, Justin Stuehrenberg, has announced his departure, effective May 30, 2025. Stuehrenberg joined the agency in March 2020 and has overseen a period of significant growth, modernizing the organization and expanding partnerships.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway commented that while the city celebrates Stuehrenberg's new opportunity, his departure is bittersweet. "Madison needed to modernize and expand its transit system to adapt to a growing, thriving city. Thanks to Justin’s leadership, Metro Transit is more efficient, sustainable, and responsive to community needs," she said. "His impact will be felt for years to come, and we are profoundly grateful for his contributions. Thank you, Justin, for your commitment to public service and for shepherding Metro into a new era."

Under his leadership, Metro Transit has reached several milestones, such as redesigning the transit network to improve service, launching a Bus Rapid Transit system, and transitioning part of its fleet to electric vehicles. Revenue from regional service partners increased significantly from $4 million in 2019 to $14 million in 2025.

Stuehrenberg guided Metro Transit through a period of transformation, acquiring federal funding and reinforcing the agency’s leadership. As he prepares to join a private sector consulting firm, he expressed gratitude to Madison residents for their support. "I'm incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together over the past five years," Stuehrenberg stated. "I am confident that the talented team in place will continue this momentum as the agency moves into its next phase of operational excellence."

Parks Superintendent Eric Knepp will assume the role of Acting General Manager until a new General Manager is appointed. The search is expected to conclude by early fall.

Stuehrenberg will be available for media interviews on April 3. For interviews, contact City Communications Manager Dylan Brogan.
