Urban Forestry has commenced its 2025 spring planting season, focused on increasing the greenery across the City of Madison. As of today, Monday, April 7, approximately 1,400 trees will be planted along city streets. The mayor’s office noted that the choice of the 33 tree species was made by the city’s arborists to promote a canopy that is "diverse and resilient" to support the urban landscape for the long term.
The planting efforts, scheduled to continue throughout April, will involve multiple Urban Forestry crews operating efficiently using an assembly-line method. After these operations conclude, crews will revert to their regular duties of pruning and maintaining other tree care activities.
In addition to the spring initiative, a second round of tree planting is planned for the fall. Residents participating in this initiative, especially those receiving new trees in their neighborhood, are encouraged to access resources provided on the Urban Forestry website. These resources offer guidance on how to care for new trees and provide answers to potential questions.
Residents curious about the tree species planted can consult the Urban Forestry website which hosts an inventory detailing information about public trees throughout Madison. Updates regarding the newly added species will be incorporated into this inventory in due course.
