The Madison College Annual Spring Pow Wow is set to take place on April 26 at the Truax Campus in Madison. The event celebrates Native American culture through performances by singers and dancers from various tribal nations across Wisconsin. The organizers aim to create "an atmosphere of unity and tradition."
The event will feature a variety of traditional drumming groups, including the Host Drum, Little Bear, as well as invited groups such as Bearheart, Little Priest Singers, 2nd Island, Tomahawk Circle, and Twin Tails. Attendees will also witness competitive dances, including the "all men’s dance, all women’s dance, appliqué special, singer championship, potato dance, and bells only."
A presentation by the Sanford WhiteEagle Legion Post 556 color guard will honor military service within the community. The event is coordinated by Madison College's Native American Student Association along with the Intercultural Exchange and the Division of College, Culture and Climate. They emphasize the "college's commitment to fostering cultural understanding and inclusivity."
The pow wow offers free admission and is open to the public. Sessions are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. For those interested in learning more, further information is available on the Native American Student Association's Facebook page.
