The Madison Police Department has published its 2024 Annual Report, following the tradition of sharing its yearly activities and initiatives with the community. The department remains dedicated to its mission statement: “We, the members of the Madison Police Department, are committed to providing high-quality police services that are accessible to all members of the community. We believe in the dignity of all people and respect individual and constitutional rights in fulfilling this mission.”

2024 presented challenges for the department. Notably, an incident occurred at Abundant Life Christian School shortly before Christmas, where an active shooter claimed two lives and injured six. The police responded promptly, and investigations by detectives are ongoing. The Madison Police Department expressed solidarity with the victims and the school community.

Throughout 2024, the department's notable activities included a 90-day Body-Worn Camera Pilot Program, managing several dignitary visits to Madison during the 2024 Presidential Election — which brought a Team City award in 2025 — and dispatching officers to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. The department also launched the Madison Proximity Project, focused on fostering better relationships between the police and community.

The MPD’s outreach activities continued throughout the city, and in 2025, a new detective structure based around bureaus is being piloted. The department remains committed to enhancing the safety and well-being of Madison.

The 2024 Annual Report is available on the Madison Police Department's website.
