The Madison Public Library is set to kick off its annual summer reading initiative, WE READ, on May 1, 2025. This program extends across Madison, offering a range of activities and projects for children and families. It features a uniquely designed map by local artist Emily Balsley. Kids are encouraged to set personalized reading goals and track their progress using a sticker sheet of expressive faces, also designed by Balsley.

Youth Services Manager Tammy Ocampo remarked, "The WE READ Map is a way to meet everyone where they’re at. Whether you’re already a reader and want to choose a goal focused on reading a set number of books this summer, or you’re new to the library and want to explore reading through a different lens, there’s something for everyone. The beauty of this piece is that it’s flexible enough for various age ranges and interests."

In August, participants are invited to collect a commemorative WE READ patch or keychain, while supplies last. During the summer, children and teens can visit local libraries to engage in 'Share Your Voice' prompts, which encourage self-expression. Completing these activities can earn them prizes such as rainbow pencils, mini notebooks, or sunglasses from the Dream Bus.

From May 1 to June 30, the WE READ Youth Voices Writing Contest will accept submissions on the theme "Roots," chosen by Youth Ambassador and City of Madison Youth Poet Laureate Justin Festge Russell. Participants have the opportunity to win cash prizes, be recognized at a Forward Madison FC game, get published in the Youth Voices Anthology, and be featured authors at the Wisconsin Book Festival Fall Celebration.

"On May 10th, 17th, and 31st, we’re hosting parties at all of our locations to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Madison Public Library," said Ocampo. "It’s the perfect time to visit a library, get or renew your library card, and pick up your WE READ materials for the summer."

Families are encouraged to explore various activities offered at the library, including music and movement-based storytimes for babies and toddlers and literacy tips displayed on digital screens to aid in developing pre-reading skills. Additionally, youth can participate in art and making programs, Read to a Dog, and various clubs spanning different interests.

More information about WE READ and the library's summer activities is available at madpl.org/weread. The program receives support from several foundations, including the Madison Public Library Foundation and the Steve Stricker American Family Insurance Foundation.
