Student-athletes in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) are beginning their fall high school athletics season, with practices for football, cheer, and pom starting on August 5. Other sports will start in the following weeks. The district expects hundreds of students to participate.

Jeremy Schlitz, MMSD’s athletics director, commented on the significance of these programs: “Our student-athletes continue to impress us not just with their athletic talent, but with their dedication, leadership and impact on our school communities. Fall sports are more than a tradition in Madison; they’re an essential part of how we build relationships, resilience and a sense of belonging for our students.”

Research has shown that participation in high school athletics is associated with higher GPAs, improved attendance, and stronger graduation rates among student-athletes compared to those who do not participate. In addition to academic benefits, athletics help students develop time management skills, set goals, and form social connections.

Schlitz added: “Sports provide an unparalleled opportunity for students to grow in confidence, in character and in connection with their school. Whether they’re suiting up for varsity or trying something new at another level, we want every student to feel like they have a place in our programs.”

Students must have a valid sports physical on file to participate. MMSD is providing free physical clinics at its four comprehensive high schools during August. Students can contact their school's athletic office to schedule an appointment.

This season also marks the use of upgraded athletic facilities that were completed last year after the district’s 2020 capital referendum. These renovations included turf fields, tracks, tennis courts, gymnasiums, and enhanced training spaces across all four comprehensive high schools.

“Our goal is to ensure every student has access to modern spaces that support physical activity, teamwork and excellence,” said Schlitz. “The community’s investment in these facilities is an investment in our students, and we’re proud to see it paying off.”

Eligibility information and team schedules are available on the MMSD website.
