The National Weather Service has forecasted several rounds of heavy rain for Wisconsin from Friday night through Monday. The City of Madison is preparing for the storms by clearing debris from storm grates and restocking public sandbag sites.
City officials are urging residents to monitor weather updates and be aware that flash flooding could make some streets impassable. Areas on the isthmus in Madison are particularly susceptible to flash flooding during periods of intense rainfall, as the stormwater drainage system can become overwhelmed. Floodwaters typically recede once the drainage system can process the excess water.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid driving or parking in areas known for flooding during heavy rain events. The city provides a historical street flooding map that highlights locations with a history of flood incidents and those likely to experience flooding again during significant rain.
The city also reminds everyone not to drive through standing water, emphasizing: "Turn around, don’t drown!"
