The City of Verona’s Department of Public Works will introduce a new Leaf Vacuum Truck this fall to improve leaf collection and protect local waterways. The change is part of the city’s effort to enhance efficiency in removing leaves and prevent them from entering streets, which can impact water quality.

A public event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the Verona Public Library parking lot. The event is organized in partnership with the Verona Public Library as part of Wisconsin Stormwater Week. During the event, Public Works staff will demonstrate how the new truck operates, explain updated leaf pickup guidelines, and answer questions from residents.

According to city officials, "The most important thing to remember is leaves should be piled on the lawn behind the curb, not in the street."

Representatives from AECOM, Verona’s engineering consultant, will attend to discuss how proper leaf disposal helps reduce phosphorus runoff into stormwater by up to 80%. This practice aims to protect water bodies such as Badger Mill Creek and Upper Sugar River watersheds.

Attendees can also participate in naming the new truck by submitting suggestions during the event. Additional activities include giveaways for children—such as candy, crayons, pencils—and themed items related to public works.

Further information about fall leaf collection is available on the city's website at https://www.veronawi.gov/472/Fall-Leaf-Pickup. Details about Wisconsin Stormwater Week can be found at https://www.wistormwater.com/.

For more details about these changes or upcoming events, residents are encouraged to contact Justin Sutkay, Street Superintendent for the City of Verona.
