This October, the City of Middleton is launching a new safety campaign called "Eyes on the Lines" to promote safe walking, biking, and driving. The initiative features Lookout Louie, a mascot designed to encourage families, students, and drivers to be more aware at crosswalks as evenings become darker and Halloween approaches.

The campaign aims to make safety engaging for children by treating crosswalk stripes as essential guides. Throughout October, residents will see weekly tips and graphics featuring Lookout Louie on social media and the city’s website.

According to the campaign materials: "For kids & families: Safer trips to school, parks, and events. For drivers: Crosswalks are the law. Slowing down protects your neighbors. For everyone: Fewer crashes and more walkable, connected neighborhoods."

As part of "Walktober," there will be ongoing activities promoting healthy walking habits throughout the month. One highlighted event is Gilda’s Run & Walk on October 5. The city also plans a special focus on Halloween safety due to increased pedestrian activity in costumes that may not be easily visible at night.

Safety checklists provided by the city remind walkers to use crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers, look both ways before crossing, and wear bright or reflective clothing after dark. Drivers are encouraged to slow down near crosswalks, avoid distractions such as phones—especially in school zones—and use headlights early in low-light conditions.

Additional resources include printable coloring sheets featuring Lookout Louie and yard signs promoting crosswalk safety. Residents are invited to share photos of Louie signs around town using #EyesOnTheLines.

Information about these activities can be found on the City Traffic Engineering webpage and through downloadable resources provided by the city.
