Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway recently tweeted about a $2.5 million grant that the city received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to create housing for individuals aging out of the foster care system.
WIS Politics reports Madison/Dane County was one of 33 communities selected to receive a Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program grant.
“Great collaboration resulted in HUD funding for homeless youth housing solutions,” Rhodes-Conway wrote in an Oct. 7 Twitter post. “Thank you to our many partners!”
HUD received almost 100 applications for the YHDP grants with a combined total of $142 million in funding being provided to applicants who understand the needs of the intended population they wish to help, according to WIS Politics.
The communities chosen have six months to develop a plan for the funds.
Briarpatch Youth Services, which received the grant in collaboration with the City of Madison, estimates that there are 300 homeless children in Dane County.
