M7, economic development partners make strong pitch for Intel chip manufacturing

Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce issued the following announcement on Jan.25.

Intel Corp. recently announced plans to build a massive chip manufacturing complex in Ohio, selecting the Columbus area over the Milwaukee Region’s bid for the $20 billion investment.

The Milwaukee 7 was part of the team that led the effort to attract Intel to southeast Wisconsin. Other partners included the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., the Racine County Economic Development Corp. and the village of Mount Pleasant. During the 10-month process, M7 hosted several site visits with key Intel personnel and together with with its partners provided Intel with massive amounts of information about the project site, infrastructure, workforce, air permitting and other siting requirements.

Intel considered numerous locations in the U.S. for its new complex, including an 871-acre site in Mount Pleasant located around the current Foxconn development. “This was a nearly year-long process of scouting a new location for a ‘megasite’ to establish our next major U.S. location,” said Intel spokesperson Krystal Heaton.

Local officials are confident that being a finalist for this project shows that the Mount Pleasant-Foxconn site has strong selling points, making it attractive to a range of industries with similar needs in terms of shovel-ready space and the sewer, water and energy infrastructure already in place thanks to the Foxconn development.

“If we can get to the final in a mega-project like this, there are lots of other opportunities for which this land, infrastructure, incentive and workforce package is going to sell well to,” said Tim Sheehy, president of the MMAC, a founding partner in the M7. “I would be shocked if we’re having this conversation a couple of years from now and those attributes haven’t matriculated into a very large project.”
