Wisconsin Air National Guard Second Lieutenant Cory Corson is one of five members of the department feted as Outstanding Airmen of the Year, agency officials recently announced.

A native of New York now residing in Baraboo, Corson took the honor in stride, taking the time to give special thanks to all those whose path he has crossed for preparing him for the moment.

“I don’t accept this as a personal award,” the Wisconsin-Platteville civil engineering grad told NBC15.com. “It credits all who have paved the way for me in my journey.”

An officer now for over the last two years, Corson previously served just under six years as an enlisted airmen in the 115th Fighter Wing.

In accepting the Outstanding Airmen award, he encouraged fellow airmen to always strive to have the right attitude and a willingness to learn all they can.

“Strive for more,” he said. “Don’t measure yourself against others. Balance, give and take. Practice financial, physical, mental, social and spiritual resiliency.”

Corson also stressed the importance of putting people first, always being willing to go the extra-mile and having goals that go beyond the basic S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) guidelines.
