Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and former Chancellor Donna Shalala recently engaged in a discussion about the state of higher education, reflecting on its past, examining current challenges, and considering what lies ahead for universities. The event brought together two leaders with deep experience in academic administration at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

During their conversation, Mnookin and Shalala addressed how universities have adapted over time to changing student needs and societal expectations. They explored the importance of research, public service, and innovation in higher education. Both emphasized the ongoing commitment to providing accessible education while responding to new challenges facing students and faculty.

"Universities are at their best when they are places where ideas can be exchanged freely and people from different backgrounds come together to learn," said Chancellor Mnookin. She added that collaboration between campus leaders and the broader community is essential for continued progress.

Former Chancellor Shalala noted, "Our role is not just to educate but also to serve as engines of opportunity for all." She highlighted the need for institutions to remain flexible as they address shifts in demographics, technology, and workforce demands.

The discussion comes as UW–Madison continues efforts to support students through programs designed to improve access and address critical needs such as physician shortages in rural areas. Recent initiatives include accelerated medical training programs aimed at quickly preparing graduates for work in underserved communities.

The university has also been recognized for clinical research that benefits transplant patients by reducing reliance on anti-rejection medication, underscoring its focus on innovative solutions with real-world impact.

As campuses welcome students back for a new academic year, university leaders reaffirmed their dedication to fostering an environment where learning extends beyond classrooms into meaningful engagement with local communities.
