As part of their ongoing crackdown on underage drinking, the Madison Police Department (MPD) recently raided a local bar, charging 137 people with offenses that included underage drinking and providing false identification.
“We are here to say that we are going to uphold our ordinances, laws and there are serious consequences for this kind of behavior both for the students, and underage people that are engaging in it,” MPD Public Information Officer Hunter Lisko told NBC15.com.
In the aforementioned incident, WQOW.com reports officers stopped at a State Street bar where they made contact with 143 people, only six of whom were able to verify their legal drinking age. All the other individuals now face charges that could carry fines that range from $379 to $691.
MPD officials and members of the University of Wisconsin Police Department joined forces to conduct the operation, with authorities indicating more citations are likely forthcoming. The name of the bar where the 137 charges and citations were rendered was not made public and officers indicated their investigation is continuing.
Depending on the number of offenses and details of the situation, establishments caught knowingly selling alcohol to underage people could lose their liquor licenses for up to 24-months.
