Portage, Wisconsin, Fire Department Chief, Troy Haase, is thanking crew members who worked to gain control over a risky blaze Jan. 2 at the Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) manufacturing plant where dairy products are produced.
"The PFD wants to thank all those that helped with the fire suppression and the support provided," Haase said in a press release posted to the department’s Facebook page.
On the morning of Jan. 2, smoke and fire that could be seen from a distance began bellowing from the AMPI plant just after 9 a.m. The fire is now believed to have started in a room that stored butter, and not long after it broke out, melted butter began flooding the building, seeping from the plant making it more difficult to gain access to the building or control the blaze.
The Portage hazmat team is being credited with doing all it could to gain control over the butter runoff and slow it from dripping into storm sewers and into a canal, according to CBS News.
No injuries were reported in connection with the blaze, though the cause still remains under investigation, CBS reported.
