Fernie Rodriguez, the associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is bringing a unique perspective to their role. Reflecting on their journey, Rodriguez shared, "I really was a successful graduate student, but the truth of it was, I was still navigating poverty. I worked anywhere on campus that would have me." This experience of navigating poverty has shaped Rodriguez's approach to supporting underrepresented student populations.

Rodriguez's personal background as a first-generation college student has deeply influenced their work. They stated, "Regardless of what I accomplish, I will always think of myself as a first-generation person — a first-generation student, a first-generation instructor, a first-generation administrator." This sense of identity drives Rodriguez's commitment to fostering inclusivity and support for all students.

The journey to their current role was not without challenges. Rodriguez recalled the initial struggle of adapting to college, saying, "College initially was messy. I came from a low-income household in a predominantly Mexican community and went to a very wealthy institution where I was suddenly in the minority." Despite these obstacles, Rodriguez persevered and found their passion in student affairs.

Having completed a PhD in higher education, Rodriguez has delved into research that is deeply personal. Their dissertation focused on the internalized masculinity constructs of first-generation Mexican American gay undergraduate men. This academic exploration also led Rodriguez to a profound personal revelation. In 2020, they began to confront their gender identity, ultimately embracing their transgender identity.

Rodriguez's multifaceted journey of self-discovery and academic achievement underscores their commitment to supporting students on their own paths of growth and understanding. As they remarked, "I want students — all students — to know that I am here for them on that journey." Through their work in Student Affairs, Fernie Rodriguez is bringing empathy, inclusivity, and a profound understanding of the complexities of identity to the University of Wisconsin–Madison community.
