Public Health Madison & Dane County has confirmed a case of measles in Dane County, with links to travel and employment in Rock County. Janel Heinrich, the Director of Public Health Madison & Dane County, stated, "We are working with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Rock County Health Department to identify contacts and will share more information about possible exposures as we know more."

Heinrich further mentioned, "Once all contacts are identified, we will check their immunization status. If they are someone who has not been vaccinated, they may need to be quarantined at home and excluded from work or school."

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through coughing and sneezing. Heinrich emphasized the importance of immunization, stating, "The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective and is much safer than getting the disease. This is a good time to check your own and your family member’s immunization records to make sure all have received the recommended doses."

The symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and a rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body. Measles can lead to severe complications, including hospitalization and death. However, it can be prevented by the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) immunization.

It is recommended that individuals ensure they have received the necessary doses of the measles vaccine. Public Health Madison & Dane County provides free vaccines to uninsured adults and children, as well as children with Medical Assistance. Vaccination clinics are available by appointment to promote community health and safety.
