MADISON, Wis. – Multiple City of Madison agencies have spent months preparing for Saturday’s Mifflin Street Block Party. The annual block party typically draws thousands of people to the 400 and 500 blocks of the street. Building Inspection, the Madison Police Department, and Madison Fire Department have been working together to ensure their safety.

Building inspectors have been conducting routine checks since February, looking for porches, balconies, and other areas that needed structural repairs. Building Inspection Director Matt Tucker emphasized the importance of attendees being cautious, stating, "If a balcony looks overloaded, it probably is. If people are bouncing or jumping, ask them to stop. These actions that people do will put you at risk."

In 2022, a porch collapse during the event resulted in three injuries, highlighting the necessity for thorough safety measures. The Madison Police Department has over 150 officers assigned to Saturday’s event, including specialized crowd management teams. Captain Mike Hanson reassured the public, saying, "This is the 55th year of the Mifflin Street block party, and for 55 years we've been planning for this, so we'll be ready and we'll see what the day brings."

Officers will be present on foot, bikes, and horses, with drones assisting in monitoring for any disturbances. A glass ban is in effect for the area, with officers actively engaging with residents to ensure compliance and safety. The Madison Fire Department has dedicated resources, including two ambulances and a walking team, to address any medical emergencies that may arise during the festivities.

Code Enforcement Officers from the Fire Prevention Division have been collaborating with the police to enforce building and balcony occupancy limits. They conducted educational outreach in the weeks leading up to the event and provided last-minute reminders on Saturday morning. Additionally, temporary occupancy restrictions and a ban on fire pit usage have been implemented to enhance safety measures.

As the community gears up for the 55th Mifflin Street Block Party, the collaborative efforts of city agencies reflect a commitment to prioritizing attendee safety and well-being.
