The City of Madison benefits from funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for programs like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME and Emergency Solutions (ESG) programs.
"In 2023, the City used approximately $10 million in federal funding for initiatives including affordable housing, neighborhood centers, small business support, job creation, and homelessness reduction," the City said.
Here are some key achievements from 2023:
- $366,000 in federal funds and nearly $1 million in City funds supported 15 neighborhood centers, benefiting around 32,000 residents.
- Over $7.1 million in federal funds and $4.2 million in City funds were used to construct or renovate more than 830 units of affordable housing.
- $1.4 million in federal funds helped over 150 homeowners make necessary repairs.
- $1.8 million in federal funds and $140,000 in State funds assisted 44 families in purchasing their first homes.
- $238,000 in federal funds, $2.1 million in City funds, and $740,000 in State funds supported local service providers, aiding over 2,800 individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Nearly $365,000 in federal funds helped create or expand more than 1,400 small businesses.
The City is now planning for the next 5 years and is seeking public input for its Consolidated Plan for 2025-2029.
"We want to hear from the community about whether the current uses of funds should continue or if there are other ideas to consider," the City stated.
