The Madison Police Department (MPD) is extending an invitation to the public for a training session aimed at preparing individuals for active shooter situations. The upcoming Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) session is scheduled for May 30.

During the training, officers will discuss real-life active shooter cases, emphasizing the strategies employed by victims and the eventual outcomes of their decisions. The trainers will also use realistic equipment to simulate potential scenarios, offering attendees a hands-on experience.

According to data, it takes police approximately three minutes on average to respond to an active shooter event. However, about two-thirds of these incidents conclude before law enforcement arrives on the scene.

MPD Lt. Lori Chalecki explained the purpose of this training: "This training focuses on the steps people can take during these tragedies to improve their chances of survival." She added that stress can cause individuals to freeze during crises, so providing them with a plan of action is crucial.

The principles taught in this course can be applied in various settings including businesses, schools, places of worship, clinics or any place where people congregate.

The training is offered free of charge and is open to all residents of Dane County. Interested parties are required to register beforehand. The details for the upcoming session are as follows:

- Date: Thursday, May 30

- Time: 6-9 p.m.

- Location: MPD Training Center, 5702 Femrite Dr.

To register for this training session, fill out the registration form available online and email it to crase@cityofmadison.com. Please note that seating is limited. An additional public training session will be offered in November.
